Lite + Brite: 29 (Re)Mixed Austin Events 7/11

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

Tonight is a big one for us: we’re hosting our final No Lights No Lycra at West China Tea House. We hope to have news of a new venue to share with you in the near future, but in the meantime let’s conclude our tenure at West China Tea with a party to remember.

There’s plenty more going on in this hot city in the coming days. Do arts & crafts with mixed media, collages, or beer. Learn about computer programming, astronomy, or queer phenomenology. Celebrate Bastille Day with punk rock, an artspace’s birthday with water balloons, a local musician’s sophomore album release with a prom do-over, or the 25-year anniversary of Woodstock 99 with grotesque erotica. And, if you can handle it, here’s one last major thing to celebrate: Brian’s birthday with us, tonight, at No Lights No Lycra! Scroll down for details on the next week of events (starting with tonight).

Also: we love supporting folks doing creative work in the community, and so, as a follow-up to our guide to making friends in Austin, note that Future Front has just launched their annual (and mostly free) social club series. So if you want to hang out with other Austinites who like slow gardening or journaling or RPGs or whatever, you can sign up for those.

If you’re not already a subscriber to this newsletter and you want to be, click here. We do one newsletter a week, usually on Fridays, plus a bonus edition around the start of each month. If you enjoy this newsletter, please support us by contributing to our Patreon and by forwarding this email to your friends who enjoy things like listening to music and leaving the house sometimes.

Let’s do fun stuff!

—Leila + Brian

It’s here! All things pass into the night. Tonight will be our final No Lights No Lycra at West China Tea House, and probably the last NLNL for a while as we regroup + look into other venue options. Since it’s the last night we’re going to be staying a little later, so tonight will run from 8pm until 10pm. Sunset is around 8:30 and the tea house has a skylight, so it’ll start dim and get increasingly darker until sunset. You can join us at any time during those 2 hours, so if you like it dark come a little later, and if not come and enjoy the sunset with us. If you want to hear how Brian Blackout’s sets at NLNL usually sound you can listen to a recording of the last one here or scroll down for a track listing. This is the closing of a chapter for us and we hope you can join us for a magical goodbye.

This week, No Humans Allowed (Brian’s radio show for robots + smart devices) was fueled by recent Bandcamp purchases and vinyl rips, and full of esoteric new wave tunes paired with a broad mix of genres new and old. Stream Upgrade 3.0.2 from the Kpiss archives here or scroll down for the tracklist. NHA broadcasts live every Wednesday at 6pm CT on

What is No Lights No Lycra?
Austin’s twice-monthly, judgment-free, substance-free, high-impact dance thing in the dark. It’s a DJ night that’s not at the club, a workout that’s not at the gym, a personal meditation that’s anything but silent. It’s produced by us, your kindly L+B overlords, and usually one or the other of us is on the hook for DJ duties. Read more about us in the Austin Chronicle. You can listen the kind of music we play over on Brian’s Mixcloud.

Recent weeks found us watching brass bands at HONK!TX, watching the eclipse at Bobo’s Snack Bar, and watching dancing forklifts at The Way of Water at Onion Creek. How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra (every second and fourth Thursday of the month), + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2024). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.
