Lite + Brite: 67 Out-of-Bounds Austin Events 11/6

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

Wow, what a week it’s been! It’s a whole new Texas, and we’re ready to celebrate + connect with our fellow Austinites out in the real world. If you’re feeling the same, you’re in luck because there’s a ton going on. We’ve got choose-your-own path Shakespeare, comedy festivals, plays about fascism invading the home in WWII (staged in someone’s actual home), drag performers messing with Disney, Celtic sports competitions, reunions of bands from Austin’s “new sincerity” past, art inspired by Pee Wee Herman, Dear Diary’s annual Secret Show, + loads more. If you’re into Austin history, you can tour old houses, solve a mystery at a historic house museum, honor the Black and Hispanic families who shaped this city, celebrate people who preserve Austin’s heritage, or take a piece of it home with you. And make sure to bank some energy while you’re at it—we’re only one week out from the Austin Studio Tour.

If you’re not already a subscriber to this newsletter and you want to be, click here. We do one newsletter a week, usually on Fridays, plus a bonus edition around the start of each month. If you enjoy this newsletter, please support us by contributing to our Patreon and by forwarding this email to your friends who enjoy things like listening to music and leaving the house sometimes.

Let’s do fun stuff!

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO

Truly, what haven’t we been up to this week? We went to the Round Top antiques fair, where we admired approximately one million tins, MCM breakfronts, brass ducks, statuary, horse show ribbons, and birdcages, and also bemoaned that we did not have time to admire approximately one hundred million more. (The fall fair is over now; the spring fair will be happening in mid-to-late March.)

We celebrated Halloween with the Mystic Krewe of Chiroptera’s annual parade, featuring light-up floats, giant balloon costumes, a brass band, and Brian wearing a mask that so thoroughly hindered his peripheral vision that he had to take little mincing steps and clutch Leila’s elbow most of the time.

We went to the Zahir’s staged reading of The American Revolution outside on the grounds of the French Legation, which was a lovely place to spend a beautiful fall evening. (Although this was a one-off, the Zahir has plenty of other stuff going on this month: a play called The Egg is on now, and Wednesday they’re doing a staged reading of another play—indoors this time.)

The audience was wonderfully supportive when Leila read an excerpt from her new book Encore Performance at the Writers League of Texas’s monthly One Page Salon at Radio Coffee & Beer. (The next One Page Salon is scheduled for December 1.)

We saw Hexpartner and Graham Reynolds play at Tiny Minotaur. Reynolds’ performance, which celebrated the release of The Portcullis Expansion Pack, included an absolutely enormous bass drum on to which he tossed various items with abandon; a kaleidoscopic projection of the British countryside; and a keyboard on which the Upper C had ceased working because he had played it too hard. The performance was followed by a themed dice game, which we felt very competitive about even though we only half understood it.

As we type this we should be getting our ish together for a house party celebrating the 300th episode of Brian’s radio show, No Humans Allowed, but on election night he dutifully manned the airwaves by playing calming music with a loose blue wave theme. Thankfully he did not invoke the ire of the Evil Eye. You can listen in the KPISS archives here.

Oh, and somewhere in there we elected a new state government.

SOCIALS

Recent weeks found us attending a classic video game fest, admiring a flock of Purple Martins, and checking out some of the unique activities we could find in the UK. Follow Lite + Brite on Instagram to keep up with our adventures. We’re now on Bluesky too. Yay federation! And come chat with us and the rest of the L+B community on our Discord server (where we sometimes post stuff early too).

ABOUT US

How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist and Side by Sideshows for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, Concept Animals’ ATX Art for You for gallery openings + artist talks, ATX Theatre for plays, and Superfantastica for weird Austin places + things. This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra, + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2026). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK, CHAMPIONS
