Lite + Brite: 43 Chic Austin Events 6/6
Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.
Outdoor movies are a core summertime activity, but in Austin the fantasy of enjoying classic cinema under the stars too often meets the cruel reality of sweat-logged 100° nights. Thankfully, many local geniuses have figured out that you can watch outdoor movies while submerged in the comfort of water. The best of all worlds! This week alone you can watch The Princess Diaries or Wreck It Ralph in a lake, Wet Hot American Summer in a pool, But I’m a Cheerleader in Deep Eddy, or Jaws at a waterpark.
Once you’ve dried off, this week also brings a vast variety of Pride events, offering makers markets, panels, storytelling, costume parties, burlesque, drag, bouquets, adult cheerleading, and so much more. We’ve also got DIY flower crown-making, wrestlers taking on the “barren dust bowl” that is New Braunfels, racing turtles, fortune-telling Armadillos, and an improvised comedy inspired by Eminem. Don’t say we never gave you anything.

Let’s do fun stuff!

OUR STUFF
Last week was an extra-busy one for L+B. First we hit an emotional milestone when we hosted our last regularly-scheduled No Lights No Lycra (playlist here). Then we had so much fun hosting Prick Up Yours Ears, our first party at Elysium. We’re so grateful to everyone who came out to that and hope you had a good time! Next up was Sky Candy’s Quinceañera, for which Lite + Brite was the official media partner. You know we love events with multiple components, and wow, let us tell you, this Quince was CHOCK-FULL of components. See some of our photos and videos here. And after all of that, Brian DJed his weekly radio show, No Humans Allowed, with an hour’s worth of inhuman songs (playlist here). This coming week, we’re not hosting anything (that we know of). We’re still catching our breath.

Inhuman Songs
No Humans is back with inhumanly funky post-punk, prog, + psychedelic jams. Synthesizers burble and careen wildly across a backbone of other instruments, expressing arty, disturbed emotional states that feel like an alien entity trying to pinpoint how it must feel to be human.

SOCIALS

Recent weeks found us getting ready for Prick Up Your Ears, watching the Buda Wiener Dog Races, and experiencing a toy art exhibit at Collection Rert. Follow Lite + Brite on Instagram to keep up with our adventures. We’re now on Bluesky too. Yay federation! And come chat with us and the rest of the L+B community on our Discord server (where we sometimes post stuff early too).
ABOUT US
How do we choose which events to feature?
Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, Concept Animals’ ATX Art for You for gallery openings + artist talks, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.
Who are we?
We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra, + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2025). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.
