Lite + Brite: 52 Unseelie Austin Events 10/18

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

We’re busily preparing for the most wonderful time of the year: stocking up on pumpkins, hunting the aisles of Austin Creative Reuse for costume crafting supplies, stacking atmospheric piles of bones, and, of course, building out on the annual Lite + Brite Halloween events spreadsheet. Readers who support us on Patreon at the $5/month level have already received their exclusive early spreadsheet access, which includes more than 150 Austin Halloween events and is growing every day.

If you want some of this exclusive early access for yourself, sign up for our Patreon here. If you want slightly less early access without paying for it, make sure you’re following L+B on Instagram or Discord; we’ll be posting the spreadsheet link there in the middle of next week. (If you do none of these things, the spreadsheet access will simply come to you in next Friday’s newsletter.)

This week most of the Halloween festivities haven’t kicked in yet, but there’s still so much going on, from political comedy shows skewering the Texas legislature to political comedy shows about reproductive rights; from volcanic wrestling to operatic wrestling; from building board games to destroying an “infinite QR code.” You can learn things, too! Learn about queer symbolism in horror movie monsters, about art history, about the history of Día de los Muertos, about séances, or about being an aging sex worker. Also, this is hard to explain but: Stonebriar was a hospice center on South Congress that got turned into an art collective that obviously is going to get turned into a mixed-use residential complex, but before that happens, the residents filmed a “paranormal documentary” which will be screening for the first time this weekend.

Let’s do fun stuff!

OUR STUFF

This coming Wednesday, No Lights No Lycra will return to 3rd Eye Meditation Lounge for a special Halloween edition of lights-out dancing. It’s spookier with the lights out! Maybe someone dancing next to you is ACTUALLY A GHOST. You’ll never know! Grab a ticket in advance here, if you dare!

If you know kids in the 7-12-year-old age range, we have an upcoming event for them! On Saturday afternoon, Leila will be doing a free program for her middle-grade novel The Campaign at Austin’s newest independent bookstore, Birdhouse Books. Leila will be signing and reading from the book, doing a Q+A for any budding writers, and leading a kid-friendly, pro-democracy activity. It’s the perfect way to get in the mood for Election Day. Scroll down for details on all this and more.

No Humans Allowed will be off this week and next while Brian is travelling, but will return on Tuesday the 29th for a night of fully synethesized terror. In the meantime you can listen to three older spooky episodes: Spectral Processing Unit, They Only Come Out at Night, + ASS1M1L8T0RS.

SOCIALS

Recent weeks found us watching brass bands at HONK!TX, watching the eclipse at Bobo’s Snack Bar, and watching dancing forklifts at The Way of Water at Onion Creek. Follow Lite + Brite on Instagram to keep up with our adventures. And come chat with us and the rest of the L+B community on our Discord server!

ABOUT US

How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra (which is on hiatus but will resume), + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2024). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK, CHAMPIONS
