Lite + Brite: 22 Gaga Austin Events 10/4

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

We hope you receive this email with more enthusiasm than a 5am blue alert many hours away or a bunch of ACL traffic headed your way. Ok hopefully a LOT more enthusiasm than either of those things. Yes Austin is about to be taken over by a lot of music fans so this weekend is a little subdued for events with more than three letters. But, a few highlights:

Fortlandia opens tonight + has an opening party today. You can watch vampires silently cavort while Thom Yorke keens wonkily. Your dreams to bee come a beekeeper can briefly bee realized. NES speed runners will be live-soundtracked by a chiptune band (I’ve seen this act before and if you’re the right kind of nerd it is incredible). Drag performers riff on D+D and Gaga. Improv comedians riff on Jane Austen and sparkly vampires at the same time. And many of our newsletter mainstays are back with more for you this week, so whether you want to roll the traffic dice this weekend or conserve your going out juices for weekday fun, you’ve got options folks.

Also, if you’ve ever considered supporting Lite + Brite on Patreon, now is an especially good time. Readers who support us at the $5 tier will soon get early access to our annual Halloween spreadsheet—that’s right, the one you surely heard about on KXAN. And they get year-round access to our advance event tracking spreadsheet, which currently has 89 entries. Plus we like them even more than we like all the rest of our subscribers, which is a lot.

Let’s do fun stuff!

OUR STUFF

No Lights No Lycra is returning to 3rd Eye Meditation Lounge this week. The first time was really lovely and we hope to keep seeing friendly faces, even if they are obscured by inky black darkness. We got the room good + dark (it’s never so dark you bump into anyone else though) and danced to our usual NLNL-style eclectic mix, which you can listen to a recording of here. This week will be a similar mix and we’ll return on October 23rd for a special Halloween edition of lights out dancing. You can get a ticket in advance here or show up Wednesday. Once again here are our remaining 2024 dates (all at 3rd Eye)

October 9 • October 23 • November 13 • December 11

No Humans Allowed is Brian’s radio show on Kpiss.fm, and is usually filled with kitschy and vaguely nostalgic bleeps and bloops from many eras, but occasionally he likes to speak to someone making such music here in Austin. This week featured an interview with prolific dungeon synth wizard the Threadmage of Assorted Potions, who performs often at Tiny Minotaur + many other spots around town. If you’re unfamiliar with the genre of dungeon synth, he gives a pretty good explanation and we get to hear lots of dungeon synth tunes along with the interview. You can stream the show off the Kpiss archives here or scroll down for a full track listing.

No Humans Allowed 209
Interview with Assorted Potions

Assorted Potions is an Austin-based dungeon synth artist who is full of energy, joy and humor. His live shows feature a wizard costume comically fresh off the rack, covers of modern pop songs, and respectful entreaties to the ladies of the audience to get to know him better. He came over to No Humans HQ where we talked Austin venues, Texas dungeon synth, cozy synth, new jack swing, and fantasy.

SOCIALS

Recent weeks found us watching brass bands at HONK!TX, watching the eclipse at Bobo’s Snack Bar, and watching dancing forklifts at The Way of Water at Onion Creek. ABOUT US

How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra (which is on hiatus but will resume), + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2024). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK, CHAMPIONS
