Lite + Brite: 45 Divine Austin Events 9/27
Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.
This is one of those weeks where there’s so much going on in Austin and in our own lives that we’re really working to get this newsletter out to you in a timely fashion. As usual, the decline in high temps will mean more and more stuff for us all to do. This weekend you can celebrate the onset of Fall, hoist beer steins for Oktoberfest, or get into the Dia de los Muertos spirit early w/commisioned altares created by artists. October is Hispanic History Month and that means lots of themed events. Take part in a fest celebrating the fusion of traditional music w/new media, enjoy food + art from across many Latin-American cultures, or elevate tacos from a mere food to that of art. Or don’t be thematic! Watch a drag tribute to Divine, or a unicorn-forward fantasy-themed drag show. Learn how to blues dance. Celebrate a monolithic reptile/automobile hybrid. Just some of the stuff you can check out this week, so enjoy it!
Also, if you’ve ever considered supporting Lite + Brite on Patreon, now is an especially good time. Readers who support us at the $5 tier will soon get early access to our annual Halloween spreadsheet—that’s right, the one you surely heard about on KXAN. And they get year-round access to our advance event tracking spreadsheet, which currently has 89 entries. Plus we like them even more than we like all the rest of our subscribers, which is a lot.
Let’s do fun stuff!
—Leila + Brian

OUR STUFF
Thanks to everyone who made it out to our first edition of NLNL at 3rd Eye Meditation Lounge. We had a great time and we will eventually be getting back into a biweekly rhythm with NLNL, but the holidays will throw things into a little bit of flux so our upcoming dates are:
October 9 • October 23 • November 13 • December 11
You can get a ticket in advance here and you can listen to a recording of last week’s edition on Brian’s Mixcloud here. Scroll down for a full track listing.
No Humans Allowed, Brian’s radio show for fans of deep synth sounds, moved to a new Tuesday slot this week, and to settle in, this week’s episode was a CD-ROM-themed sampler of all things NHA with lots of italo, new beat, + synthpop. You can stream this week’s episode on Kpiss or check out the full show archives. Keep scrolling for the full playlist. Also, Brian recorded an interview with the Threadmage from Austin’s own Assorted Potions this week to talk about Tiny Minotaur + all things Texas Dungeon Synth. That’ll be airing on this coming Tuesday’s episode of NHA which airs live w/a chat at 6pm CT on Kpiss.fm.

SOCIALS
Recent weeks found us watching brass bands at HONK!TX, watching the eclipse at Bobo’s Snack Bar, and watching dancing forklifts at The Way of Water at Onion Creek. Follow Lite + Brite on Instagram to keep up with our adventures. And come chat with us and the rest of the L+B community on our Discord server!
ABOUT US
How do we choose which events to feature?
Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.
Who are we?
We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra (which is on hiatus but will resume), + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2024). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.
