Lite + Brite: 28 Olympic Austin Events 7/26

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

We’re sending out this week’s email earlier than usual because we’ve got TIME-SENSITIVE NEWS! First off, we’re teaming up with our pals over at ATX TV Fest to host an Olympics Opening Ceremony watch party on Friday. There will be baguette-eating contests, flag-making, uniform-judging, prize-awarding, and more. And whether or not you make it out, you can join us on the new Olympics channel on the L+B Discord, where we’ll be supplying live banter. Scroll down to the “our stuff” section of this email for all the details. We’d love to see you there + find out how fast our readers can house a baguette!

Perhaps EVEN MORE time-sensitive: This evening is Brian’s 200th episode of No Humans Allowed! That’s four years of shows on the internet’s most beloved urine-themed radio paradise. Once again, scroll down to “our stuff” for all the relevant info, and tune in this evening at 5pm.

In non-“our stuff” stuff, events this week also include a huge-ass warehouse party, anniversary parties for two of our favorite local indie storefronts, an opportunity to get new books for free (plus baked goods, only the baked goods cost $), a Billie Eilish look-alike contest, a “Shrek rave,” an event where you can dress up as a sea beast while listening to sea shanties, a Klezmer puppet show, a free poolside honky-tonk drag show complete with inflatable bull riding, and the final Poo Poo Platter. (What is Poo Poo Platter? Why is Poo Poo Platter? Read our interview with the show’s founder and all will become clear.) You guessed it: scroll down for info on all this and plenty more.

Since we’re bringing this newsletter to you early, some events might pop up late that we can’t include in our email newsletter. For you completists out there, we’ll be updating our website with any Johnny and Jenny-come-latelies and also chatting about them on our Discord. The late bird occasionally gets the worm too.

Let’s do fun stuff!

OUR STUFF

We love ATX TV. Their festival is an annual highlight, and we love that they do year-round programming to foster an Austin community around TV fandom. So we are thrilled to announce that on Friday we are teaming up with ATX TV to co-host a free Olympics Opening Ceremony watch party! The event starts at 6pm at Vacancy Brewing. Some highlights of the evening will include:

  • A big screen and top-quality sound for full Opening Ceremony enjoyment
  • A baguette-eating contest (sacré bleu!)
  • Art supplies for making your own flag
  • The Parade of Austin Neighborhoods (Like a DIY Parade of Nations)
  • Audience judging of national team uniforms
  • Prizes!
  • Did we mention it’s free?

Getting to meet L+B subscribers and enjoy creative activities with y’all IRL is one of the best parts of writing this newsletter. We look forward to doing just that on Friday! And whether or not you’re there in person, you should join the Olympics channel on our Discord where we will all be sharing our wittiest of commentary.

Tonight from 5-7pm, Brian is celebrating 200 episodes of No Humans Allowed on internet radio station Kpiss, aka the Golden Stream. That’s 200+ hours of road trips with everyone’s favorite anthropomorphized paperclip, undersea journeys, SxSW post-mortems, dance parties at the sometimes imaginary Club Dongle, terrible AI-generated pulp detective stories, beach simulations, interviews with kickass Austin-based synth peeps, + italo, electro, and synthpop for and about robots. Tune in on Kpiss.fm, say hello in the chat + share some choice robot dancing gifs.

SOCIALS

Recent weeks found us watching brass bands at HONK!TX, watching the eclipse at Bobo’s Snack Bar, and watching dancing forklifts at The Way of Water at Onion Creek. Follow Lite + Brite on Instagram to keep up with our adventures. And come chat with us and the rest of the L+B community on our Discord server!

ABOUT US

How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra (every second and fourth Thursday of the month), + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2024). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK, CHAMPIONS
