Lite + Brite: 34 Wuthering Austin Events 7/19
Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.
Short intro today because we were out at Hot Summer Nights until 3am. It’s continuing tonight and tomorrow so you, too, still have two chances to catch some free live music and then wake up way too late the next morning/afternoon.
First up this week, we’ve got movies. You can see short local films on the theme of mind + body, short local films specifically about feminism, the latest installment in a film series about vices, a film being created live by its director while you watch, an “anti-movie,” or a blockbuster in a pool. Beyond the world of cinema, this week you can also immerse yourself in 90s hip-hop culture, shop affordable art, eat free vegan snacks, take in a drag show where a performer will surely be dressed as the Lorax, dance among a herd of Kate Bushes, or sing karaoke BUT only if you’re in costume. Scroll down for details on all this and more.
If you’re not already a subscriber to this newsletter and you want to be, click here. We do one newsletter a week, usually on Fridays, plus a bonus edition around the start of each month. If you enjoy this newsletter, please support us by contributing to our Patreon and by forwarding this email to your friends who enjoy things like listening to music and leaving the house sometimes.
Let’s do fun stuff!

OUR STUFF
We’re getting ready to celebrate No Humans Allowed‘s milestone episode 200. Brian has been doing his radio show for robots for over 4 years now, which is 400 in radio show years. To mark the occasion he’ll be doing a special double-length episode next Wednesday featuring his best tracks and gimmicks. You can tune in this Wednesday at the special time of 5pm CT on kpiss.fm. This week’s show (episode 199) was devoted to robots feeling the burn in a workout tape. You can stream Pumping Silicon from the Kpiss archives here or scroll down for the tracklist.
Last week was our final No Lights No Lycra at West China Tea House, and we got to say farewell to the space in style with lots of friends + dancers in the dark. We’re on the hunt for a new space so if you know of anything please reach out. We need to be able to make it dark, no alcohol can be served, and it needs to be easy to get there. We did record last week’s NLNL and you can listen to it here or scroll down for a tracklist + more info.
What is No Lights No Lycra?
Austin’s twice-monthly, judgment-free, substance-free, high-impact dance thing in the dark. It’s a DJ night that’s not at the club, a workout that’s not at the gym, a personal meditation that’s anything but silent. It’s produced by us, your kindly L+B overlords, and usually one or the other of us is on the hook for DJ duties. Read more about us in the Austin Chronicle. You can listen the kind of music we play over on Brian’s Mixcloud.

ABOUT US
How do we choose which events to feature?
Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.
Who are we?
We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra (every second and fourth Thursday of the month), + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2024). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.
