Lite + Brite: 39 Prismatic Austin Events 4/19

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

Hi, how are you? We’re doing great over here at L+B. Our HQ is full of felines once again, and the events are coming willy-nilly so we have LOTS to share with you. It’s both Earth Day and Record Store Day + on top of that there are lots of art, film, + immersive events going on across town. Need help making sense of it all? We’re your huckleberry.

This week you can: take part in the biggest vinyl shopping day of the year, watch a nature doc complete with David Attenborough narration and a live score, witness speedy wieners, “feel the freedom of flying + screaming” by connecting with our city’s namesake bat population, watch cats that sometimes (but not always) will do tricks on command, hear death metal book readings, cross the metaphorical Rubicon with clay art, bike around an F1 track, or experience many more versions of fun, all of which are laid out below like one of those horns of plenty spilling art, immersion, + wacky videos out onto the screen of your device of choice. Now get out there and do some things.

If you’re not already a subscriber to this newsletter and you want to be, click here. We do one newsletter a week, usually on Fridays, plus a bonus edition around the start of each month. If you enjoy this newsletter, please support us by contributing to our Patreon and by forwarding this email to your friends who enjoy things like listening to music and leaving the house sometimes.

Let’s do fun stuff!

OUR STUFF

We’ve got many plans in the works. First off we’re working on a collaborative Summer playlist we can share with all of our readers (aka you). If you wanna get a head start, you can begin by figuring out your Song of the Summer early and have it holstered and ready to go. We’ll have details on that in our next monthly newsletter, but we’ll be starting it off with a bang so make all the necessary mental preparations.

Secondly there was no new edition of No Humans Allowed this week despite the fact that the station seemingly survived the apocalypse and ended up helmed by Fred Armisen in the Fallout TV show. Anyway, Brian is lining up a number of interviews for that show with many excellent Austin-based musicians, so keep an eye out. Also, it seemed like a good time to remind everyone about the interview he did a while back with Adam Jones of Austin’s Holodeck Records, SURVIVE, Thousand Foot Whale Claw, + many other projects. You can stream the episode on the Kpiss archives here or scroll down for more info. NHA returns live next week, and broadcasts every Wednesday at 6pm CT on kpiss.fm.

No Lights No Lycra happened last week but won’t be back until May 9, but we recorded Brian Blackout’s DJ set from the last edition and you can listen to that here or scroll down for a track listing, some album art, that kinda deal.

What is No Lights No Lycra?
Austin’s twice-monthly, judgment-free, substance-free, high-impact dance thing in the dark. It’s a DJ night that’s not at the club, a workout that’s not at the gym, a personal meditation that’s anything but silent. It’s produced by us, your kindly L+B overlords, and usually one or the other of us is on the hook for DJ duties. Read more about us in the Austin Chronicle. You can listen the kind of music we play over on Brian’s Mixcloud.

ABOUT US

How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We are Leila + Brian. We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most often No Lights No Lycra (every second and fourth Thursday of the month), + also BYOT, a party where we share very good YouTubes (here’s a playlist from the last one). We go very hard seeing bands at SxSW (here are playlists of our favorites from 2024). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at liteandbriteatx.com, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK, CHAMPIONS
