Lite + Brite: Austin Events 12/22

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

This week we passed a meaningful benchmark in our subscriber count. I’m not going to tell you what that benchmark is because I worry you’d be like “oh it’s so sad that Leila thinks that number of subscribers is meaningful.” It’s like when you say to someone, “These jeans were such a bargain, you’ll never guess how much I paid for them,” and they guess, “Fifteen cents,” and then you feel deflated because actually you paid ten dollars. Anyway, we are very grateful for all our subscribers for getting us to this mysterious meaningful benchmark. You are even better than a pair of bargain jeans.

This is, unsurprisingly, a quiet week for events. The highlight is probably Tuba Christmas tomorrow (Friday) morning. We went to Tuba Christmas last year (here’s our Instagram post about it) and it was delightfully weird. Otherwise, there are so few events happening this week that we’ve gone ahead and also listed some of our NYE finds. If you scroll past the normal weekly event listings, you’ll find some indie sleazy, Bowie-esque, and hellish ideas for the 31st.

If you’re not already a subscriber to this newsletter and you want to be, click here. We do one newsletter a week, usually on Fridays, plus a bonus edition around the start of each month. If you enjoy this newsletter, please support us by contributing to our Patreon and by forwarding this email to your friends who enjoy things like listening to music and leaving the house sometimes.

Let’s do fun stuff!

—Leila + Brian

Our next live event won’t be until 2024, but in the meantime we’ve got some music to share with you if you’re looking for a little ear candy. Brian played an hour full of indie rock, synthpop, + R&B Christmas songs on his radio show, No Humans Allowed, last night on Kpiss. Stream that here or scroll down for the track listing. NHA broadcasts live every Wednesday at 6pm CT on

We did our final 2023 No Lights No Lycra (our dance party in the dark) last week. We’ll be back at West China Tea on January 11th. Thanks to everyone who’s stopped by over the year. You can listen to a live recording of last week if you need something non-holiday themed to listen to, or if you wanna hear what NLNL sounds like. Or scroll down for the tracklisting.

What is No Lights No Lycra?
Austin’s twice-monthly, judgment-free, substance-free, high-impact dance thing in the dark. It’s a DJ night that’s not at the club, a workout that’s not at the gym, a personal meditation that’s anything but silent. It’s produced by us, your kindly L+B overlords, and usually one or the other of us is on the hook for DJ duties. Read more about us in the Austin Chronicle. You can listen the kind of music we play over on Brian’s Mixcloud.

Friday 12/22

  • Tuba Christmas at the state capitol
Christmas songs performed by a symphony of tuba players
  • Illumaverse at dadaLab
    Immersive, holiday-themed light installations
  • The Mutt-cracker (Sweet!) at the Vortex
An all-dog not-at-all-ballet production of the holiday favorite

How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We make this newsletter. We do our own events, most prominently No Lights No Lycra (every second and fourth Thursday of the month). We once got called “local Austin couple” by KXAN. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.
