Lite + Brite: 36 Cthonic Austin Events 8/11

Hello, what’s up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

Last weekend we went to see the Purple Martins roosting in a shopping center in Round Rock, which was a pretty stunning sight. We posted video to our Instagram, but you can also go up there to see them yourself—the Travis Audubon Society says the birds should be out there at sunset every day for the next couple weeks. Hey, you know what else is at sunset? No Lights No Lycra, our dance party in the dark, tonight! Also coming up is Austin Pride, which is like regular Pride, only in August. We’re planning to go to Hyde Park Storytelling on Saturday. If you want to see corgi races, we recommend showing up early, as last time there was a line literally around the block and it is way too hot for that nonsense. Tell us about your plans on the L+B Discord. And scroll down for details on all these events and more.

If you’re not already a subscriber to this newsletter and you want to be, click here. We do one newsletter a week, usually on Fridays, plus a bonus edition around the start of each month. Please support us by contributing to our Patreon and by forwarding this email to your friends who enjoy things like listening to music and leaving the house sometimes.

Let’s do fun stuff!

—Leila + Brian

TONIGHT from 8-9:30pm we’ll be at West China Tea House for No Lights No Lycra. We’ll be continuing to dance through the dusk into the dark, and we’ve been using some creative lighting ideas and sunset-appropriate tunes. You can listen to a playlist of music from July’s edition here or scroll to the bottom of this newsletter for a track listing.

No Humans Allowed spent this week following the adventures of a Microsoft employee named Clippy who is secretly a super spy with a taste for martinis and kicking ass. There may or may not be an AI generated screenplay about his adventures and a bunch of mid-90s downtempo, house, + acid jazz to soundtrack his adventures. This message will now self destruct. Listen to Paperclip Avenger on the KPISS archives, or scroll down for the full tracklist + some of the goofiest episode art yet. NHA is live every Wednesday at 6pm CT on

Paperclip Avenger

Friend of the show Clippy reveals a secret double agent life + his new catchphrase, featuring a soundtrack of house, acid jazz, downtempo, + techno that would expect from a spy thriller from the Win95 heyday depicting an anthropomorphized paperclip with a thirst for vengeance and dry martinis.

A huge thank-you to our Patreon subscribers Alexander Freed, Spencer, Kristen Backor, Timon A., Kate Murray, and Amy Wilde. We’re deeply grateful for your support, which allows us to do things like “pay our Mailchimp fee” and “spend hours researching Austin events when technically we should be working.”

If you’d like to support us on Patreon and get access to exclusive member-only benefits, you may do so here.

Follow Lite + Brite on Instagram to keep up with our adventures. Recent weeks brought us to a fiberartists’ talk at ArtUs Co., a backyard carnival and variety show, and a flock of Purple Martins in a Round Rock parking lot. And come chat with us and the rest of the L+B community on our Discord server!

How do we choose which events to feature?

Honestly, it’s pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, The Darker Side of Austin for goth and metal stuff, and the 60+ Weirdest Things in Austin for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?

We make this newsletter. We put on No Lights No Lycra every second and fourth Thursday of the month. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at, and support us on Patreon if you like what we do.
